The plant department grew out of a requirement to maintain and provide on-track support to a fleet of 8 HTT HP950 Access Unit RRV’s, these were owned by Network Rail and used by Aspire Rail.

The vehicles were maintained both on and off site and at a workshop, on-site fitter cover was provided at various locations on the infrastructure, when providing fitter cover the fitters would on and off track the Road Rail Vehicles (RRV’s) and in doing so gained a greater degree of reliability.

Aspire Rail has a fleet of ten road rail lorry MEWPS comprising two SRS/Volvo LRB 8-2T1 and eight Harsco Rail/Volvo HTT HP950 Access Units. These can be driven on the road as conventional trucks, to positions as close to the work site and track as is possible. They can on/off track and travel under live OHLE enabling them to be in place and ready to work and provide maximum utilisation of available work time.

All Aspire Rail road rail vehicles have recently undergone refurbishment and recertification to RIS-1530-PLT. This includes an engineering change to replace the standard twin rear truck wheels with single ones, suitable for both road and rail use.

The plant staff at Aspire Rail has a high level of experience encompassing base vehicles, RRV’s and Rail Mounted Maintenance Machines (RMMM) and because they have experience of working in a commercial environment as well as fleet, it was decided to develop the plant department as both a supporter of in-house plant and a provider to the rail industry maintenance and refurbishment of RRV’s and RMMM’s. In April 2009 we gained link up accreditation to carry out this work.
